"Going Green" not a big deal to consumers
By Randy Hall
CNSNews.com Staff Writer/Editor
August 15, 2007
(CNSNews.com) - Despite unwavering attention from the media, government and business, global warming is only of moderate concern to most consumers, according to a new survey of consumers and their environmental attitudes.
"Consumers are not drinking the Kool-Aid when it comes to green," said J. Walker Smith, president of the Yankelovich, Inc., marketing firm, which released the survey results on Monday.
"While they're highly aware of environmental issues due to the glut of media attention," said Smith, "the simple fact is that 'going green' in their everyday life is simply not a big concern or a high priority."
This is "the first study of its kind to examine how much consumers truly care about green issues," stated the research firm, based in Chapel Hill, N.C., in a news release, which further noted that only 34 percent of consumers feel much more concerned about environmental issues today than a year ago.
These groups largely use "spoke-alarmists whose own wretched excesses expose the movement's hypocrisy and/or lack of seriousness," Horner said. As a result, "the consuming public sees this for what it is: a fashion accessory or statement of fashionability, but not a crisis." (Don sez - algore consumes at least 12 times more energy than the average American)
Telephone calls and e-mails seeking comments from such "green" groups as the Sierra Club, Greenpeace International, the Environmental Defense Club and the Natural Resources Defense Council were not returned by press time. But Smith had some good news for environmental activists. (Don sez - is anybody surprised? They can't refute science.) Read the article...

I'll take Two!
life-size bronze statue of a rat. It had no price tag but it looked
so striking that he decided he must have it.
He took it to the owner and asked,
"How much is the bronze rat?
"Twelve dollars for the rat, and a hundred dollars if you bring it back."
"I'll take the rat and I won't be bringing it back."
As he walked down the street carrying the bronze rat, he noticed
that a few real rats had crawled out of alleys and sewers, and began
following him down the street. This was a bit disconcerting, so he
began to walk a little bit faster. Within a couple of blocks, the group
of rats behind him grew to over a hundred, and they began squealing.
He started to trot towards the Harbor. He took a nervous look
around and saw that the rats numbered in the thousands, maybe in the
millions, and they were all squealing and coming towards him faster and faster.
Terrified, he ran to the edge of the water and threw the bronze rat as
far out into Galveston Bay as he could.
Amazingly, the millions of rats all jumped into the water after
it, and were drowned.
The man walked back to the curio shop. "Aha," said the owner,
You're bringing it back !"
No," said the man. "I came back to see how much you
want for that little bronze Mexican over there?

Reagan’s Speech at the Brandenburg Gate
It was on June 12, 1987, that President Ronald Reagan gave his famous “tear down this wall” speech in West Berlin, an event that marked the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union.
Here are some excerpts from that speech:
“Behind me stands a wall that encircles the free sectors of this city, part of a vast system of barriers that divides the entire continent of Europe. From the Baltic, south, those barriers cut across Germany in a gash of barbed wire, concrete, dog runs, and guard towers. Farther south, there may be no visible, no obvious wall. But there remain armed guards and checkpoints all the same -- still a restriction on the right to travel, still an instrument to impose upon ordinary men and women the will of a totalitarian state.
“Yet it is here in Berlin where the wall emerges most clearly; here, cutting across your city, where the news photo and the television screen have imprinted this brutal division of a continent upon the mind of the world. Standing before the Brandenburg Gate, every man is a German, separated from his fellow men. Every man is a Berliner, forced to look upon a scar…
“…In the 1950's, Khrushchev predicted: ‘We will bury you.’ But in the West today, we see a free world that has achieved a level of prosperity and well-being unprecedented in all human history.
“In the Communist world, we see failure, technological backwardness, declining standards of health, even want of the most basic kind-too little food. Even today, the Soviet Union still cannot feed itself. After these four decades, then, there stands before the entire world one great and inescapable conclusion: Freedom leads to prosperity. Freedom replaces the ancient hatreds among the nations with comity and peace. Freedom is the victor.
“And now the Soviets themselves may, in a limited way, be coming to understand the importance of freedom…
“…There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace. General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

Quote of the Day
Here's an excellent quote by Thomas Sowell in the National Review. Don't you wish congress could apply his common sense to the immigration problem? Read his article by clicking the title.
People who are pushing for a "guest worker" program show not the slightest interest in what has been happening under guest-worker programs in Europe. Facts are apparently irrelevant. So is logic. Guests are people you invite to your home. Gate crashers are people who come without being invited. Home invaders are people who break in, despite doors that have been shut to keep them out.
Enjoy!

Amnesty Bill Fails Senate
Have the Republicans grown a spine? Did they get the picture? The Amnesty Bill was a massive failure! Hip hip hooray!
Mexicans who have gone through the system and obeyed the immigration laws don't want illegal Mexicans to be awarded citizenship.
Let's hope the fence gets built and illegals are treated as the criminals they are.
Here's a great link for building the fence!

Don't Say It!!!
Are there words or phrases you can't stand to hear? Every generation has it's group of fad or over used words and phrases. Some are very interesting others are STUPID! The interesting words will come another time.
Here's a list of words and phrases I could go years without hearing and never miss them.
Actually - Why use it at all? If it's not already "actually" what is it?
Usually - This word is used too much. It means there is an exception but nowadays it’s used as an absolute. How many times have you wanted to know the policy of something and the answer is "USUALLY we don't do that". I always ask what the exceptions are. You should, too.
Kind of or Kinda - 'Kind of' is a phrase that shows similarities but nobody uses it that way. I kinda think you shouldn't do that. Class, we're kinda going to take a test. And the best for last... I'm kinda pregnant.
These ones - Does this need explaining?
So, but, anyway - How many times have you heard that used? Most of the time the Amway speaker is at a loss of words and regurgitates 'so, but, anyway'. Even a fool is considered wise when he's silent.
Like - For over 50 years it's been used to start sentences. Like, ya know?
I think so - Are people so mindless that they don’t know what they’re doing? Are you wearing glasses? I THINK SO. Did the ball hurt you when it smashed your face? I THINK SO. How about “I THINK we have a doctors appointment. Where are you going? (While seated in an airplane at 33,000 ft) I THINK I'M TAKING A PLANE TRIP. Are you a teacher? I THINK SO. The last one is frightening.
Fundamentalist - It’s mindlessly used to put someone down or to make someone feel superior over another. These same people don’t realize that all forms of rational thought begin with “Fundamentals”. Fundamentals are the foundation of everything we do. Being a Fundamentalist means you have a foundation on which to build.
Have a nice day - It’s fine if someone means it but I can’t tell you the last time that happened. It’s just something people without thinking. It means nothing.
Me and - This is a pet peeve deluxe. Me and Joe are... AKKKKKKKKKKKK! STOP IT!. Never start a sentence with 'me'.
Sorry - It's no longer a feeling of regret. It’s down right rude to knock someone down because you’re not paying attention and then say “sorry, teehee”. It shows contempt when somebody takes some of your Freedom Fries without asking and says, “sorry”. Besides, if you do something on purpose why would you say you're sorry?
Hi Guys - Not necessarily when addressing some friends, but when it comes from the hostess or waitress at a nice restaurant it’s so crude. I don‘t want giggly and bubbly. I want service and I want to be left alone. It should be banned from all eating establishments.
Profanity, anywhere or anytime is never appropriate.
It’s not a big deal - Somebody cuts in line, It’s not a big deal I do it all the time. Someone destroys something of value to you, It’s not a big deal I’m insured.
The Man upstairs - God is not some good ol’ boy. He deserves honor to His name.
It can’t be done - Yes it can. Unless you're kenny g trying to make a soprano sax sound good. Maybe there's an occasional exception, that is, as long as I approve of it.

Prius Outdoes Hummer in Environmental Damage!
The Toyota Prius has become the flagship car for those in our society so environmentally conscious that they are willing to spend a premium to show the world how much they care. Unfortunately for them, their ultimate ‘green car’ is the source of some of the worst pollution in North America; it takes more combined energy per Prius to produce than a Hummer.
Before we delve into the seedy underworld of hybrids, you must first understand how a hybrid works. For this, we will use the most popular hybrid on the market, the Toyota Prius.
The Prius is powered by not one, but two engines: a standard 76 horsepower, 1.5-liter gas engine found in most cars today and a battery- powered engine that deals out 67 horsepower and a whooping 295ft/lbs of torque, below 2000 revolutions per minute. Essentially, the Toyota Synergy Drive system, as it is so called, propels the car from a dead stop to up to 30mph. This is where the largest percent of gas is consumed. As any physics major can tell you, it takes more energy to get an object moving than to keep it moving. The battery is recharged through the braking system, as well as when the gasoline engine takes over anywhere north of 30mph. It seems like a great energy efficient and environmentally sound car, right?
You would be right if you went by the old government EPA estimates, which netted the Prius an incredible 60 miles per gallon in the city and 51 miles per gallon on the highway. Unfortunately for Toyota, the government realized how unrealistic their EPA tests were, which consisted of highway speeds limited to 55mph and acceleration of only 3.3 mph per second. The new tests which affect all 2008 models give a much more realistic rating with highway speeds of 80mph and acceleration of 8mph per second. This has dropped the Prius’s EPA down by 25 percent to an average of 45mpg. This now puts the Toyota within spitting distance of cars like the Chevy Aveo, which costs less then half what the Prius costs.
However, if that was the only issue with the Prius, I wouldn’t be writing this article. It gets much worse.
Building a Toyota Prius causes more environmental damage than a Hummer that is on the road for three times longer than a Prius. As already noted, the Prius is partly driven by a battery which contains nickel. The nickel is mined and smelted at a plant in Sudbury, Ontario. This plant has caused so much environmental damage to the surrounding environment that NASA has used the ‘dead zone’ around the plant to test moon rovers. The area around the plant is devoid of any life for miles.
The plant is the source of all the nickel found in a Prius’ battery and Toyota purchases 1,000 tons annually. Dubbed the Superstack, the plague-factory has spread sulfur dioxide across northern Ontario, becoming every environmentalist’s nightmare.
“The acid rain around Sudbury was so bad it destroyed all the plants and the soil slid down off the hillside,” said Canadian Greenpeace energy-coordinator David Martin during an interview with Mail, a British-based newspaper.
All of this would be bad enough in and of itself; however, the journey to make a hybrid doesn’t end there. The nickel produced by this disastrous plant is shipped via massive container ship to the largest nickel refinery in Europe. From there, the nickel hops over to China to produce ‘nickel foam.’ From there, it goes to Japan. Finally, the completed batteries are shipped to the United States, finalizing the around-the-world trip required to produce a single Prius battery. Are these not sounding less and less like environmentally sound cars and more like a farce?
Wait, I haven’t even got to the best part yet.
When you pool together all the combined energy it takes to drive and build a Toyota Prius, the flagship car of energy fanatics, it takes almost 50 percent more energy than a Hummer - the Prius’s arch nemesis.
Through a study by CNW Marketing called “Dust to Dust,” the total combined energy is taken from all the electrical, fuel, transportation, materials (metal, plastic, etc) and hundreds of other factors over the expected lifetime of a vehicle. The Prius costs an average of $3.25 per mile driven over a lifetime of 100,000 miles - the expected lifespan of the Hybrid.
The Hummer, on the other hand, costs a more fiscal $1.95 per mile to put on the road over an expected lifetime of 300,000 miles. That means the Hummer will last three times longer than a Prius and use less combined energy doing it.
So, if you are really an environmentalist - ditch the Prius. Instead, buy one of the most economical cars available - a Toyota Scion xB. The Scion only costs a paltry $0.48 per mile to put on the road. If you are still obsessed over gas mileage - buy a Chevy Aveo and fix that lead foot.
One last fun fact for you: it takes five years to offset the premium price of a Prius. Meaning, you have to wait 60 months to save any money over a non-hybrid car because of lower gas expenses.

Mission Accomplished II
Incidentally, the sign wasn't located in the immediate background. It was placed high on the top of the control tower (aka the island) for all to see as they approached port.
Why was it there?
The sign was signifying the end of the USS Abraham Lincoln's 10 month deployment. One of the longest, if not the longest, on record for a United States Navy ship. It was hanged at the request of the crew members because they had accomplished their mission. That was a proud moment for the crew of the USS Lincoln, which the media snubbed in favor of criticizing the President.
What the mainstream media didn't tell you is that the sign had nothing to do with the operations in Iraq. The President's speech stressed that point when he said in the speech:
"We have difficult work to do in Iraq."Does anybody really get a sense that a mission had been accomplished.
"The transition from dictatorship to democracy will take time."
"The battle of Iraq is one victory in a war on terror that began on September the 11, 2001."

Mission Accomplished?
Today is the anniversary of the Mission Accomplished speech the President gave on the USS Abraham Lincoln. For laughs, I looked up the speech and read it. Then, like a slap in the face, something was missing. I read it again and again. Much to my surprise the thing that was missing was the phrase "Mission Accomplished". It's no where to be seen.
So why is it called the "Mission Accomplished" speech? The only thing I can think of is because them mainstream media elite want you to believe he said it. Why would somebody want to lie to us like that?
Maybe they're filled with so much hatred that they'll do anything to discredit somebody they don't like. It's obvious to me they hate the truth.

Another Tragedy
After the initial shock of the shootings at Virginia Tech the pundits started throwing out their usual slop of 'what ifs' and 'if onlys' around. One of the first cry out of the shoot was the need for strict gun control. Naturally, that's what this country doesn't need. For some reason it doesn't sink into the heads of these extremists that law abiding citizens don't commit these crimes. The crimes of shooting people are executed by people who have no regard for the law. Another thing that doesn't reach the gray matter in their skulls is the fact that criminals will always have access to guns. Any type of guns. They purchase them from criminals who sell other criminals guns.
Virginia has a conceal and carry law. By the way a concealed weapon is not a handgun. A concealed weapon is a weapon you can't see. A handgun in a holster that's hanging from your hip is not a concealed weapon. A shotgun or bazooka under a trench coat is a concealed weapon. At any rate, you can carry a weapon anywhere except on the campus of a school. It's not a state law, it's a decision made by the board of regents of that university. If Virginia Tech allowed law abiding citizens to carry concealed weapons maybe the criminal wouldn't have been able to kill 32 students.

Illegal Aliens Go Home!
I believe our judges need to enforce the laws for driving drunk. Too often the criminal isn't given a sentence for his crime. Instead the criminal is given another opportunity to drive drunk. That's not acceptable.
Drunk drivers who kill should be given the full sentence.
As far as illegal aliens are concerned, they have no business being in this country. Secondly, they have absolutely no business committing crimes in this country. When an illegal is arrested they should serve their time and then be deported.
Come to think of it, when an illegal alien is arrested they should be deported.

Is She for Real?
It's disgusting.
Pelosi, who is heading the "Look at Me" tour of the Middle East, met with Assad on Wednesday. Not only did this anger the Bush Administration but she indicated to Assad and the world that she had delivered a message saying that Israel was ready to engage in peace talks.
"We were very pleased with the reassurances we received from the president [Assad] that he was ready to resume the peace process. He was ready to engage in negotiations for peace with Israel," Pelosi said.
WHAT?
What the Giggler of the House failed to mention were the only (reasonable) terms Israel will acknowledge for negotiations. I added the 'reasonable' part.
Vice President Chaney said, "She made a nonsensical statement."
He's right. Come to think of it, nonsensical statements are about all she's ever uttered. She's incapable of thinking a partial thought all at once. Has Pelosi ever known what she's talking about?
Prime Minister Olmert emphasized that although Israel is interested in peace with Syria, "that country continues to be part of the axis of evil and a force that encourages terror in the entire Middle East".
"In order to conduct serious and genuine peace negotiations, Syria must cease its support of terror, cease its sponsoring of the Hamas and Islamic Jihad organizations, refrain from providing weapons to Hizballah and bringing about the destabilizing of Lebanon, cease its support of terror in Iraq, and relinquish the strategic ties it is building with the extremist regime in Iran," it said.
Whether or not Syria implements these measures will determine if Syria is sincere about making genuine peace with Israel, Olmert said.

Hey, the courts got it right! Go the the Cato Institute, click the name, and see how some hand gun laws were found unconstitutional in Washington, D.C.
Trivia: Did you know...
In the 2nd amendment the word “militia” does not mean the military. During the time of the writing of the constitution the word militia meant 'an armed public' or 'citizen soldiers. The public in England couldn't own firearms to protect themselves. The object of having an armed public is to prevent a “Tiananmen Square” event from happening on our soil.

Did You Know?
A about 3 weeks ago I got this email called "Did you know...". Just like most of the emails of this type it was loaded with wrong information. I decided to correct them. Chocolate affects a dog's heart and nervous system; a few ounces will kill a small sized dog. Chocolate toxicity depends on the amount of theobromine in the chocolate. A toxic dose is about 45-50 mg/lb. As most white chocolate contains little theobromine, it is usually not enough to cause symptoms. Milk chocolate contains smaller levels of theobromine, so it would take more to cause symptoms. Some dogs have a higher tolerance than others, but that is the general guideline. Unless your dog was given many chocolate bars at a time or you were feeding him 1-lb bars of chocolate (or baker's or semi-sweet chocolate, which contain more theobromine and are fatal is smaller amounts) it would probably not cause great harm-- mild symptoms include diarrhea, hyperactivity, and vomiting-- but some dogs may be more sensitive so I would not try it personally! It also varies according to the dog's age and health. Found on a veterinary site.

Baptists, Lent and Peanut Butter
Is there something you really like? Think about it for a minute. How about a favorite beverage. Some people drink Dr. Pepper everyday, not because they're addicted, but because they like Dr. Pepper. For some it's that morning cup of coffee. Maybe it's not a beverage. It could be a favorite TV show or, gasp, emailing or something at work.
For me it's peanut butter. Life seems to revolve around peanut butter. I'm not addicted but if it's in the house it must be eaten. I'll eat it on just about anything. Toast, potato chips, cold pizza or a bake potato. It doesn't matter. Peanut butter makes everything taste better. It's a life enhancer. Some friends would say that coffee is my thing. Coffee is great and is imbibed from morning until late at night. But peanut butter... that's a different story.
Since our pastor, Rick Thompson, arrived a few years ago he's challenged us to participate in Lent. For most people being Southern Baptist means you don't participate in Lent. Nobody really knows why. The Catholics have had that corner of the market since anyone can remember. But for Baptists it's rarely, if ever, done.
Lent is that period of time that begins 40 days before Easter, Resurrection Sunday. In a nutshell Lent is a period of fasting, praying and alms giving. For many Lent has been the the tail end of a joke. But the purpose Lent is to give up something that's important to us so when we think about it we're reminded of what Jesus gave up for us, His life.
Prayer is naturally of utmost importance. How else can you communicate with Him? Oh sure, you can say you can pray while you're on the golf course, but you don't go to the golf course to pray. Prayer should be something you come to a complete stop to do. Yes, you can pray while walking but when you're quiet before the throne of grace your mind can focus on God. During Lent we it would do us all good to find a time of quiet and focused prayer and Bible reading that's different than normal.
Alms giving is giving of your time or money to those in need. It doesn't have to be someone you don't know. You have neighbors and relatives. Think about being kind toward people for 40 days and you'll be better for it. What are you like in traffic? That would be a good start wouldn't it.
Lent is good and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Correction...
I made a slight mistake in the last post about "God the Father" being translated "God the Parent" in the Holman Christian Standard Bible. 1 John 5:1 (HCSB) says, "and everyone who loves the parent also loves his child." Well, the word translated as parent is literally, "he who begats". Parent is a legitimate translation.
I should have translated the verse before making the remark.

Church and Sermons
I had a gig at a local church this last week end. The music was a lot of fun and the musicians were very good. I've always enjoyed being asked to sub for my bass friend, who is an excellent player.
There were 2 services. After the first service I did my usual thing and sat up front to listen to the sermon. I don't know about you but I like being close to the front. There's a sense of involvement or participation up close that I don't get when sitting in the back. I'm not the type to sit and soak.
At any rate, the pastor did something I hadn't heard in a long time. He preached from the Bible and the Bible only. He didn't quote one single man. I was refreshed. Wow, I thought, this is great.
The Bible I took was the Holman translation. I don't like it and am going to put it back on the shelf for reference. One phrase was "God the parent". ACCK! It's supposed to be "God the Father". That's what the Greek says, I know I read Greek.
Back to the sermon. The pastor wasn't fiery or flamboyant. He just preached from the Bible. I hope the word gets out. If there's one thing we don't need it's sermons filled with what man has to say. That's why we're in deep trouble. God's Word is what we need to hear.

Quiet Please ... and Remove Your Hat
I like going places. It doesn't matter where. A nice restaurant where the food is good and puts a smile on my face or just a drive. Long trips are the best. When I was a kid it was like going on an adventure.
One thing I remember is that everybody would dress up when they went somewhere. Men would wear a coat and tie and women would wear a dress and jewelery. Even if you went to a baseball game the men dressed nice. And you never saw a man with a hat on his head if he was inside. It just wasn't done. If there was a rude chart then wearing a hat indoors would have been near the top. That's something that bugs me. No matter how nice the restaurant is half the men are wearing a stupid cap. I want to go over to them and yank it off and throw it on the floor. What's the big deal about wearing a hat anyway? If you're reading this and you wear a hat indoors then stop it right now. And don't let your kids do it either.
I love electronic devices. Laptops, Pocket PC's, MP3 players and cell phones are too good to believe. The Internet is tremendous. Hooray for the guy that invented it. He was a genius. Since he was a genius we know algore couldn't have anything to do with it.
There's one thing about them. No matter where you go someone is being rude with their electronic device. There's something about them that impair the senses. I think it's because you can't do two things at once unless one of those things is natural, like breathing.
It'd be a great thrill if the world would discover etiquette. Over the past few years I've tried to imagine going to a restaurant and not hearing someones phone conversation from across the room or listen to somebody trying to sing while listening to their MP3 player. How come only the people who can't sing always sing in public? And why do people have to talk so loud when they're on a cell phone?
HELLO. I'M HAVING A QUIET DINNER...
Think about how rude is it to have your phone go off in the restaurant. There ought to be voluntary electronic device free zones. I don't think the government should get involved.
The next time you go out anywhere remember to turn off the phone and take off your hat.

More on the Global Warming Hoax...
If you're like me there are occasions when the discussion of global warming comes to the point when the frustrated supporter asks you to name just one scientist that thinks global warming isn't the fault of humans.
Enter the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine (OISM). If you need the name of a scientist you can go to the link (located in the title of this blog) and access one of, get ready, over 17,000 scientists who know global warming is a lie. You can even access them by state.
Another fact that has been making the news is that most who say they believe in global warming receive funding. If you don't believe then you don't get paid.
Does that mean "follow the money trail?"

Idiots to Vote?
Idiots from New Jersey may soon have the right to vote, Reuters reports:
State Senate President Richard Codey introduced a bill on Monday that would remove language from the New Jersey constitution that was designed more than 150 years ago to prevent people suffering from mental illness or handicap from casting their vote in national, state or local elections.
Codey wants to eliminate a section that says "no idiot or insane person should enjoy the right of suffrage" and substitute with a reference to "a person who has been adjudicated by a court of competent jurisdiction to lack the capacity to understand the act of voting."
Codey, a Democrat who was previously acting governor of New Jersey, said in a statement the term "idiot" is "outdated, vague, offensive to many and may be subject to misinterpretation."
He said individuals with cognitive or emotional disabilities may be capable of making decisions in a voting booth, and those people should not be discriminated against.
Idiot was actually once a clinical term that referred to someone on the FAR LEFT (of the bell curve). It was the lowest grade of "mental deficiency," as a table we found on this page shows the IQ range Classification:
- 70-80 Borderline deficiency
- 50-69 Moron
- 20-49 Imbecile
- Below 20 Idiot
Today "deficiency" is called "retardation," and the IQ range Classification are as follows:
- 50-69 Mild
- 35-49 Moderate
- 20-34 Severe
- Below 20 Profound
So once the law is brought up to date, the only New Jerseyites who will be ineligible to vote are those who are profound.

The Language Barrier
Happy New Year!
I'm sitting here in front of the computer thinking about things that bug me. Do you have things that bug you? I have a few things, if you count several thousand as a few things.
Have you ever noticed that the next generation doesn't talk like the previous generation. The English classes of today are very similar to those that were used several generations ago. For some reason the next generation has always found it necessary to create a code language.
Call it rebellion.
Since the 1920's each generation has created it's own code speak. Does anybody really know what "23 skidoo" means? How about, "beat me daddy 8 to the bar"? I've yet to find anybody explain, "it's like, you know, like yeah!" to me.
One of the catch phrases of the past 60 years has been, "Nobody understands me". Have you ever wondered why?

Saddam's Execution a Crime?
According to Cardinal Renato Raffaele Martino, the head of the Vatican's Justice and Peace department, executing former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein would be "avenging a crime with another crime".
This is ludicrous. It's called justice not crime. Mass murder is a crime. Saddam, unfortunately, lived to go through a justice system that could have proved him innocent. He is going to be put to death in a quick and humane method. Something his hundreds of thousands of victims never enjoyed.
The execution of saddam is justice. He will never murder again.

Jesus is Born!
Merry Christmas!
Christ Born of Mary
And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.
Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.
So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Glory in the Highest
Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them,
“Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:
“Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another,
“Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.”
And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.
PRAISE BE TO GOD!

The History of Christmas - Part V
Birth of John the Baptist
Now Elizabeth’s full time came for her to be delivered, and she brought forth a son. When her neighbors and relatives heard how the Lord had shown great mercy to her, they rejoiced with her.
Circumcision of John the Baptist
So it was, on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him by the name of his father, Zacharias.
His mother answered and said, “No; he shall be called John.”
But they said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.”
So they made signs to his father—what he would have him called. And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, “His name is John.” So they all marveled.
Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, praising God. Then fear came on all who dwelt around them; and all these sayings were discussed throughout all the hill country of Judea. And all those who heard them kept them in their hearts, saying,
“What kind of child will this be?” And the hand of the Lord was with him.
Zacharias’ Prophecy
Now his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:
“ Blessed is the Lord God of Israel,
For He has visited and redeemed His people,
And has raised up a horn of salvation for us
In the house of His servant David,
As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets,
Who have been since the world began,
That we should be saved from our enemies
And from the hand of all who hate us,
To perform the mercy promised to our fathers
And to remember His holy covenant,
The oath which He swore to our father Abraham:
To grant us that we,
Being delivered from the hand of our enemies,
Might serve Him without fear,
In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.”
“And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest;
For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways,
To give knowledge of salvation to His people
By the remission of their sins,
Through the tender mercy of our God,
With which the Dayspring from on high has visited[e] us;
To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death,
To guide our feet into the way of peace.”
So the child grew and became strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.

The History of Christmas - Part IV
The Song of Mary
And Mary said:
My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant;
For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me,
And holy is His name.
And His mercy is on those who fear Him
From generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm;
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
And exalted the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
And the rich He has sent away empty.
He has helped His servant Israel,
In remembrance of His mercy,
As He spoke to our fathers,
To Abraham and to his seed forever.”
And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house. -Luke 1:46-56

The History of Christmas - Part III
Mary Visits Elizabeth
Now Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, to a city of Judah, and entered the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Then she spoke out with a loud voice and said,
“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 But why is this granted to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 For indeed, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45 Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.”-Luke 1:39:45 (NKJV)

The History of Christmas - Part II
Christ’s Birth Announced to Mary
Then Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be, since I do not know a man?”
And the angel answered and said to her,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God."
Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible.”
Then Mary said,
“Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.-Luke 1:34-38 (NKJV)

The History of Christmas - Part I
“Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And having come in, the angel said to her,
‘Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!’
Then the angel said to her,
‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”

Do You Start Your Christmas* Shopping Tomorrow?
Here are some interesting things about "Black Friday". The source is Wikipedia so you can take it with a grain of salt.
Black Friday
Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving in the United States, is historically one of the busiest retail shopping days of the year. Many consider it the "official" beginning to the Christmas season.
The first use of this term to describe the day after Thanksgiving is not exactly known. There are two popular theories as to its origin.
One theory is that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss for most of the year (January through November) and made their profit during the Christmas season. When this would be recorded in the financial records, common accounting practices use red ink to show negative amounts and black ink would show positive amounts. Black Friday is the beginning of the period where they would no longer have losses (the red) and instead take in the year's profits (the black).
Another theory comes from the fact that shopping experience on this day can be extremely stressful. Employees of retail stores have for years referred to Black Friday in a satirical way, to note the extremely stressful and hectic nature of the day. Heavy traffic and customer demands added to the long hours make it a difficult day.
Notice that Christmas is used instead of the offensive P.C. holiday season.

Happy Thanksgiving Eve?
I'm baking pies. I've been baking bourbon pecan and mince meat with bourbon for the past few years. I believe I've found the missing ingredient my aunts used to use but never told anyone.
At any rate, I didn't have a crust for the mince meat. Crust is something to be mastered next year. So off to the store. It was packed! One thing crossed my mind like it does every Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve:
DOESN'T ANYBODY DO THEIR THANKSGIVING SHOPPING BEFORE THANKSGIVING EVE?
There we were. 200 men, obviously husbands, standing in line and each with a can of green beans, a loaf of bread, a gallon of milk and a can of cranberry sauce. In other words the things you'd think were impossible to forget since they've all been staples all of our lives.
Since men don't use shopping carts you heard the clank of green beans and cranberry sauce hitting the floor. Naturally they'd stoop to help each other and then you'd hear more cans clanking on the floor. Not me. No sir. I was dropping pie crusts while helping these guys with their cans. I went back 3 times to insure the crusts weren't broken.
THEN
After checking out all of the above for the past hour the clerk has the nerve to get on the intercom and say "need a price check on milk". You hear 200 men in unison cry out:
$2.99 for whole, $3.19 for 2%, $1.49 for bread, green beans are 2 for $0.99 and cranberry sauce is $0.89.
They've been checking this stuff out and they need a price check? What have they been doing all day? Doesn't anything sink in?
Oh good grief... I need a can of green beans... here we go again...

Republicans Don't Need a Big Tent!
There's been some talk on other blogs about the Republicans need a Big Tent. I've only seen the Big Tent as a problem. Different versions of a similar theme is one thing but so far the Big Tent means allowing members to have opposing views. Having different ways to accomplish the same goal is good but not agreeing on the same goal isn't.
Conservatives need unity.
A party can't have it both ways.
To make another point, we voted for our representatives and senators based on what they said they would do. They broke their promises and did the liberal thing. We can't have it. The Conservatives need to get back to the basics.
Vote against big government.
Vote for permanent tax cuts for everybody, including the so-called rich.

Conservatives are More Charitable than Liberals?
I just received this from my friend Kevin.
Syracuse University professor Arthur C. Brooks is about to become the darling of the religious right wing in America —- and it's making him nervous.
The child of academics, raised in a liberal household and educated in the liberal arts, Brooks has written a book that concludes religious conservatives donate far more money than secular liberals to all sorts of charitable activities, irrespective of income.
In the book, to be released this month, he cites extensive data analysis to demonstrate that values advocated by conservatives —- from church attendance and two-parent families to the Protestant work ethic and a distaste for government-funded social services —- make conservatives more generous than liberals.
The book, titled "Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism" (Basic Books, $26), is due for release Nov. 24.
When it comes to helping the needy, Brooks writes: "For too long, liberals have been claiming they are the most virtuous members of American society. Although they usually give less to charity, they have nevertheless lambasted conservatives for their callousness in the face of social injustice."
For the record, Brooks, 42, has been registered in the past as a Democrat, then a Republican, but now lists himself as independent, explaining, "I have no comfortable political home."
Since 2003 he has been director of nonprofit studies for Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He has lectured in Spain and Russia and makes about 50 appearances a year at professional conferences around the world.
Brooks is a behavioral economist by training who researches the relationship between what people do —- aside from their paid work —- why they do it, and its economic impact.
He's a number cruncher who relied primarily on 10 databases assembled over the past decade, mostly from scientific surveys. The data are adjusted for variables such as age, gender, race and income to draw fine-point conclusions.
His book, he says, is carefully documented to withstand the scrutiny of other academics, which he said he encourages.
The book's basic findings are that conservatives who practice religion, live in traditional nuclear families and reject the notion that the government should engage in income redistribution are the most generous Americans, by any measure.
Conversely, secular liberals who believe fervently in government entitlement programs give far less to charity. They want everyone's tax dollars to support charitable causes and are reluctant to write checks to those causes, even when governments don't provide them with enough money.
Such an attitude, he writes, not only shortchanges the nonprofits but also diminishes the positive fallout of giving, including personal health, wealth and happiness for the donor and overall economic growth. All of this, he said, he backs up with statistical analysis.
"These are not the sort of conclusions I ever thought I would reach when I started looking at charitable giving in graduate school, 10 years ago," he writes in the introduction. "I have to admit I probably would have hated what I have to say in this book."
Still, he says it forcefully, pointing out that liberals give less than conservatives in every way imaginable, including volunteer hours and donated blood.
In an interview, Brooks says he recognizes the need for government entitlement programs, such as welfare. But in the book he finds fault with all sorts of government social spending, including entitlements.
Repeatedly he cites and disputes a line from a Ralph Nader speech to the NAACP in 2000: "A society that has more justice is a society that needs less charity."
Harvey Mansfield, professor of government at Harvard University and 2004 recipient of the National Humanities Medal, does not know Brooks personally but has read the book.
"His main finding is quite startling, that the people who talk the most about caring actually fork over the least," he said. "But beyond this finding I thought his analysis was extremely good, especially for an economist." Brooks says he started the book as an academic treatise, then tightened the documentation and punched up the prose when his colleagues and editor convinced him it would sell better and generate more discussion if he did.
To make his point forcefully, Brooks admits he cut out a lot of qualifying information.
"I know I'm going to get yelled at a lot with this book," he said. "But when you say something big and new, you're going to get yelled at."

Fall
I love the beauty God gave fall.
The color is magnificent. The temperature is perfect. The air is dense.
Sitting on the patio with Midge in the cool mornings while drinking coffee and eating the pecans that have dropped off the tree is a real treat. Soon there be a hard frost and the persimmons will be ready to eat.
The bird feeder is full of seed and we'll watch the birds. Soon the woodpeckers will be back. A barn owl has been visiting.
There's no more yard work.
What a wonderful time of the year.

Will Republicans Get It?
The chairman of the Republican National Committee, Ken Mehlman, said he was disappointed on a number of counts, following the democrat (they aren't democratic) victories in key House and Senate races. I was discouraged by his comments.
Mehlman said in a FoxNews interview:
"I think the American people clearly sent a message, and it's a message we need to understand and we need to listen to, and we as Republicans need to follow." Sounds good doesn't it. Well, Ken Mehlman said there are three thing Republicans must do:
1. First and foremost, rededicating themselves to their "conservative, reform principles."
I totally agree with this BUT why did they leave them in the first place? We elected them because they ran on conservative issues. Issues we believe were important enough to entrust with our votes.
2. He said Republicans must "try to work where we can on a bipartisan basis with Democrats," while maintaining conservative principles.
This is something I don't get. We didn't elect conservatives to work with democrats, Independents, Libertarians or any other party. They were elected to do the job they said they would do. It's totally up to the other parties to work with us or not. I believe many are willing to do the right thing.
3. He said Republicans must lose the taint of corruption: "We need to remember, people who serve...at any level are people that ought to be about public policy and public service."
Republicans and Conservatives are always going to be held with our feet to the fire. democrats and liberals can get away with corruption because it's expected of them. They're the party of corruption, immorality and deception. Republicans and Conservatives are held to a higher standard.
"there's no reason why Republicans and Democrats can't work together on national security (the threat posed by "that religion of peace") immigration reform and health care reform."
democrats have never been in favor of reform unless reform meant doing what they want. democrats will not work with Conservatives. Their leaders demand every member to march in lock step with their tenets. It's their way or the highway. It's always been that way and it always will be. We could learn from the democrats.
Remember: Democratic is a process. democrats are what they are.

Coffee
Yes, coffee.
Let's all say it together.
Coffee.
Don't you feel good? Ahhh, the lovely bean meant for careful roasting and hot water steeping. It's name brings calming to the nerves.
Coffee smells great.
Coffee tastes great.
Coffee settles the nerves.
Coffee is the best reason for waking up in the morning.
georgia
There are some who drink coffee and those who enjoy coffee. Is there a difference? Of course there is.
By the way, I'm not a coffee drinker!
Those who drink coffee settle for less. They'll drink that bitter watery liquid they serve at diners, convenience stores and truck stops. You know what I mean. The brew that needs 5 creams and 5 sugars per cup just to get it down. Drinking doesn't allow for the time of savoring the roast or the nuances of the flavor. Enjoying creates a trance of elation.
Coffee must be carefully roasted by experts. The beans must be carefully packaged by monks that have taken a vow of silence. They must be delivered in the dead of night in plain brown paper sacks by the light of a full moon. The beans should have exotic names such as Columbian, Kona, Sumatran, Guatemalan and Kilimanjaro.
Coffee.
Juan Valdez doesn't have a clue.

Man-Made Global Warming Hoax
Here is a great column written by Tom Gremillion. I've not added any editorializing. You can check out the link.
Global warming is a hoax, invented in 1988, that combines old myths including limits to growth, sustainability, the population growth time bomb, the depletion of resources, pollution, anti-Americanism and anti-corporate sentiment and, of all things, fear of an ice age. Those that espoused and supported the old myths have joined forced into a new group called “Environmentalists.”
Most environmentalists have no technical or scientific credentials whatsoever. What they have are major news outlets ready and willing to publicize their every utterance regardless of whether or not they are backed up by scientific proof. Atmospheric science requires highly technical knowledge and skills, not possessed by the vast majority of the so-called environmentalists, who yet feel qualified to demand that human activity subjugate itself to the whims of their new deity, Mother Nature.
Environmentalists claim that the Earth’s atmosphere is getting hotter. They claim that the polar icecaps and glaciers will melt and sea levels will rise over two hundred feet, flooding most coastal cities. They claim that many areas of the Earth will turn into deserts. They make all these claims but cannot substantiate them with real scientific evidence. Parts of the polar icecap and glaciers are melting but other areas of the polar icecaps and glaciers are thickening. The environmentalists base their “proof” of the existence of global warming on the melting areas but are strangely silent, even militant to the point of violence, if anyone mentions the areas that are thickening, and those thickening areas are many.
In the past, there have been many times when the global mean temperatures were warmer, sometimes much warmer and colder, much colder than they are now. Global mean temperatures are cyclical with the seasons but also with other normal cycles, as they have been for the entire history of the Earth. Scientific data from ice cores, tree rings and other indicators of global mean temperatures prove this. Human activity has never been the cause of these global temperature swings as the “global warming” advocates claim. If human activity was the cause, where were the SUVs, the power plants and industries in our historical past? They did not exist. If human activity was not the cause of these global temperature swings, what was?
The energy output of the Sun is far greater in one second than human activity could produce in a million years. The Earth rotates around the Sun. Its orbit is slightly elliptical. The energy reaching the Earth from the Sun varies slightly as the distance from the Sun to the Earth varies due to its elliptical orbit. The Sun activity increases and decreases with fluctuations in the solar flares emitted by the Sun. Differences in these fluctuation rates cause increases and decreases of solar energy hitting the Earth. This causes fluctuations in the global mean temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere.
In 2004, the energy from massive solar flares bombarded the Earth with solar energy. This solar energy caused heating of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere. Most of the energy of the solar flare eruptions dissipated into space. The amounts of energy ejected were massive, much greater than normal. Had the Earth received a full blast of the solar energy from one of the numerous flare eruptions in 2004, the consequences to life on Earth could have been disastrous. The higher than usual amounts of energy that struck the Earth’s atmosphere did have their effects, however, including some heating of the atmosphere.
Then there is the eruption of volcanoes, such as Mt. St. Helens, ejecting dust and ash into the Earth’s atmosphere. The amount of dust and ash in the atmosphere varies the amount of energy that can cause heating or cooling of the Earth’s atmosphere. Volcanoes also eject the kind of compounds that environmentalists call greenhouse gases. A single eruption the size of the Mt. St. Helens eruption released more of these gases, dust and ash into the atmosphere than all such emissions by human activity since the beginning of recorded human history. And there are numerous volcanic eruptions yearly.
The oceans are also a major source of greenhouse gases, as are trees. Trees and other vegetation take in carbon dioxide and give off other gases such as methane, a major greenhouse gas, and a host of other compounds, many of which are also greenhouse gases. Decaying vegetation also gives off methane gas. Studies of smog in the Los Angeles basin indicate that over 90% of the smog is generated by the vegetation in the area. To aid in perpetuating the hoax, however, environmentalists, aided by major news media outlets, censored and suppressed this study.
Studies have shown that greenhouse gases produced by human activity accounts for around 1 percent of the gases in the atmosphere. The total elimination of human generated greenhouse gases would have a negligible effect on Earth’s global mean atmospheric temperatures. The elimination of all U.S. gasoline powered vehicles would reduce worldwide “greenhouse” emissions by less than 0.2%.” What would be the effect on global mean temperatures? None. Doubling of manmade greenhouse emissions above current levels would increase the global mean temperature by one degree Centigrade, which is within the normal range of temperature swings.
It is the fluctuations of the Earth’s orbit around the sun, volcanic eruptions, the emission of gases by oceans and trees, all natural occurrences, that cause rises and declines in global mean temperatures, i.e., “global warming” and “global cooling,” not human activity.
Satellite data taken over the past 25 years indicate no surface or atmospheric warming. If anything there has been a very slight cooling, on the order of 0.01 degree Centigrade.
Recently, astronomers have noticed a thinning of the polar icecaps on Mars.
Is this “global warming, Mars style” and do Martian SUVs, power plants, and industries cause it? Hardly, but the “environmentalists” think so. Some even blame it on us here on Earth.
Global warming IS a hoax. Those claiming that “global warming” is real have an agenda other than saving the planet from human activity.

The Cursing Parrot
Jimmy received a parrot for his birthday. The parrot was fully grown, with a very bad attitude and a worse vocabulary. Every other word was a swear word; those that weren't cursing were very rude.
Jimmy tried to change the bird's attitude by constantly saying polite words, playing soft music-anything he could think of. Nothing worked.
He then tried yelling at the bird, but the bird got worse. He shook the bird, and the bird got madder and ruder.
Finally, in a moment of desperation, Jimmy put the parrot in the freezer. For a few moments he heard the bird swearing, squawking, kicking and screaming and then, suddenly, there was absolute quiet.
Jimmy was frightened that he might have actually hurt the bird, and quickly opened the freezer door. The parrot calmly stepped out onto Jimmy's extended arm and said, "I'm sorry that I offended you with my language and my actions, and I ask your forgiveness. I will endeavor to correct my behavior".
Jimmy was astounded at the changes in the bird's attitude and was about to ask what had changed him, when the parrot continued, "May I ask what the Chicken did?"

Shock! Horrors! Unbelieveable!
Last night was the first time in memory that I ever missed a world series game. This is so out of character. Instead of watching the game I went to see the Turtle Island String Quartet! I had completely forgotten about the series.
A mental slip like this calls for drastic measures. I'm calling the doctor and making an appointment for a psychiatric assesment.
If it were anything but a world series game.......

I, Me, Mine
I, Me, Mine.
(with apologies to George Harrison)
All through the day
I me mine, I me mine, I me mine.
All through the night
I me mine, I me mine, I me mine.
George Harrison
Captains log: Sometime in 2004.
A few years ago I noticed the possibility that I might be self-centered. It wasn't an overpowering awareness that sent me to my knees begging forgiveness. It was subtle. I noticed I had a tendency to cut people off in traffic, to scream at stop sign runners and a few other things like rushing to the checkout stand in order to beat the little old lady with two items while I only had a basket full. Okay, maybe it wasn't a tendency. It was the way I acted. Good grief, I'm a sinner. Thankfully the thought left as quickly as it came.
The selfishness of the world had always been obvious. Things like cutting someone off in traffic, not opening doors for others and letting kids run wild in restaurants are rampant. Even I did it and knew full well that I was in the wrong every time. Hey, I'm not perfect. I'll try and do better. And I did! Except in school parking lots. Oh, and at stop signs. But I didn't cut off little old ladies at the grocery store.... as often.
Then came the clinker. The one thing that began to drive me crazy. Everybody started talking about themselves. Really, they did. Okay, it wasn't like everybody in the world suddenly started talking about themselves. I started to notice that virtually every sentence was about "I, Me, Mine". It was awful. "Listen to 'em", I said, "I this. I that. Me, me, me. They all sound like the gulls on "Finding Nemo!" MINE! MINE! MINE! MINE! MINE!"
I Thought to myself,
"CAN'T ANYBODY SAY A SENTENCE WITHOUT USING A FIRST PERSON SINGULAR PRONOUN?"
I was soooooo glad that I wasn't like them. (Luke 18:11) Or was I? I started listening to myself. I used FPSP's, too! Not a little bit. A lot.
"I'M JUST LIKE THEM! ARGGGGH!"
"Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others." (Phil. 2:3-4)
Captains Log: 47 days before Lent 2006.
The pastor has asked us to participate during Lent. The idea was to give up something during the 40 days of Lent. Not just something that wouldn't be missed like not going to Africa to be a missionary or to not eat spinach. It has to be something dear or important to us. It's supposed to be a reminder that God gave up His Son (John 3:16) for us.
Guess what I gave up.... That's right! First person singular pronouns. And peanut butter. Hey, I love peanut butter! Giving up FPSP's wasn't easy to do. I had to think about everything I was going to say in order not to use a FPSP. Imagine having to think before you speak. Going an hour was hard enough, but I was going to go 40 days. There were many thoughts about God giving up His Son.
Thinking about others was the other side of the coin. As Philippians 2:4 says,
"Look not every man on his own things, but every man also
on the things of others.”
In order to not use FPSP's another person had to come into the picture. It was no longer "my house" it was "our house". Not "what will I have for dinner " but "what will we have for dinner". The subject could no longer be me but others.
There was no way I could go that long without using FPSP's. I was a failure but the lessons learned were invaluable. Next year I'll have to give something else up for Lent because I'm going to continue the practice of not talking about myself. Maybe I'll give up peanut butter.
Try it. You'll hate it but you'll love the lessons.

FLASH: The United States of America is not a Democracy.
Ladies and Gentlemen hold on to your hats. There is truth that the USA is not a democracy. We are a Representative Republic.
SAY WHAT?
That's right. We vote for senators and representatives and it's up to them to carry our wishes because we vote for them.
A democracy is mob rule. The USA is not governed by mob rule.
SAY WHAT, again?
Allow me to evince you with a brilliant analogy.
A ship carrying 5 disgusting males and 1 charming and beautiful female wrecks and they are stranded on a deserted island.
One man decides to ask the woman for her hand in marriage. She turns him down because he's disgusting. The others follow suit and are similarly declined. The men declare that they are going to vote in order to instigate compelled marriage. It will be fair because everyone will be allowed to vote regardless of age or mental capacity. The vote is 5 to 1.
Get it?
Got it?
Good.
My apologies to Danny Kaye.

I Read the News Today..... October 5, 2006
Can you believe it? Amber Mangum, a seventh grader, was approached by an employee of the D.D. Eisenhower Middle School, in in Prince George’s County, Maryland, and told to stop reading her Bible during her free time at school or face disciplinary actions.
Huh? In the U.S. of A? Sad but true.
What does the U.S. Constitution say?
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. It's clear as day. How in the world can anybody say that what she did was unconstitutional?
Well, some responsible attorneys for The Rutherford Institute have filed a civil rights lawsuit in defense of the First and Fourteenth Amendment rights of Amber. Students are allowed to read religious texts during their free time because it's constitutional.
Hate groups hope otherwise.

Group Insists Martin Luther King Was a Republican -- 10/02/2006
This article makes total sense. The democrat party has always been the party of racism. Now they're the party of the plantation. To the democrats the government is the plantation and they want to keep us completely dependent upon it. No thank you, democrats.

(CNSNews.com) - A radio ad sponsored by the National Black Republican Association (NBRA), a grassroots activist group, not only touts Martin Luther King, Jr. as a Republican but also states that 'Democrats passed those black codes and Jim Crow laws. Democrats started the KKK,' and 'Democrats fought all civil rights legislation from the 1860s to the 1960s.'
The radio ad begins running in Florida on Monday. It has already run in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Georgia, causing controversy among Democrats as well as Republicans.
According to the Associated Press, the U.S. Senate campaign of Maryland's Republican Lt. Gov. Michael Steele asked the NBRA to stop running the ad and called it 'insulting to Marylanders.'
The problem with the ad, according to Kevin Martin, a member of the conservative black leadership network Project 21, is not that the ad isn't factually true but that the NBRA is using a dead man to further its cause, something he said is a Democratic, not a Republican tactic.
'We do not need to stick words into a dead man's mouth,' Martin told Cybercast News Service, 'no, not for our policies. Our policies do win at the end of"

Radical Christianity??
Rosie O'Donnell once again shows that she's safe from the threat of being accused of having any trace of the ability to think rationally.
Does anyone have any idea where she could have come up with such nonsense? Maybe from Katie Couric?
She says weren't attacked by a nation. Does the Taliban and Afghanistan come to anyones mind? Afghanistan was, duh, ran by the Taliban. The Taliban trained al queda in the country they ran. Does anybody remember President Bush telling the Taliban to turn over the al queda members that were responsible for the crime of murdering innocent people. Does anybody remember the Taliban handing them over? Of course not.
Does anybody remember who the U.S. attacked? It was the Taliban and al queda. Anybody that was an innocent bystander and was killed can rest assured they weren't targets. Al queda targets the innocent.
Christianity doesn't murder. Islam does.
The real tragedy is that there are people that think she's right.

Living Wage May Not Be the Solution
Have you heard the news? A study issued by the Employment Policies Institute says the so-called "living wage", A.K.A. a higher minimum wage, may be more of a hindrance than a help. The study has found that prices tend to surge as unemployment rises in municipalities that require employers to pay more than the federal or state minimum wages.
NO KIDDING???
Robert Strauss, an economics professor at Carnegie-Mellon University and the guy who conducted the study for the Employment Policies Institute said, "Municipalities that adopt living wage ordinances holding various things constant, have on average ten percent lower employment after adoption."
In case you don't get it, this means that employers have to let employees go in order to pay the other employees the mandatory higher wage. This means that unemployment goes up.
Strauss admitted that he was surprised by the outcome of his study. Now if only congress can figure it out.

Chicago's Mayor Daley Defies Liberal Thinking
In what may be the first time in recent history a democrat actually did the right thing instead of following the way the wind blows.
Daley vetoed a law that would have required retailers earning over $1 billion in annual sales and stores with at least 90,000 square feet of space to pay workers at least $10 an hour in wages plus $3 in benefits by mid-2010.
He had campaigned against the measure for months because he claimed it would drive jobs and desperately needed development from some of Chicago's poorest neighborhoods and cause most retail giants to abandon the city.
Hooray for Mayor Daley.

9/11/2001 Where Were You?
Five years ago today the single worst act of terrorism committed on U.S. soil, nearly 3,000 people died when two hijacked jetliners crashed into New York's World Trade Center, causing the twin towers to fall, a commandeered jetliner smashed into the Pentagon and a fourth hijacked plane crashed in western Pennsylvania. In each case, the cause of the terror were practitioners of that "religion of peace".
I was fishing with my father in law. Where were you?
